Samara Joy's success after her debut on Verve 'Linger Awhile' from 2022, fresh out of the conservatory, was unparalleled. Live shows that received rave reviews worldwide, multiple Grammys (a unique achievement for a debuting artist on Verve) and gigantic numbers of albums sold; Samara Joy has become a new face in the jazz firmament. With 'Portrait' she does not choose the beaten path; she does not choose the seductive pop path, but chooses the shadowy forest path called 'Jazz'. She was inspired by the jazz greats who recorded in the studio where she recorded 'Portrait', the legendary Rudy van Gelder Studios in New York. It results in a very intriguing work, on which she shows what she can do with her voice; from Sarah Vaughan-esque, multi-octave scales to Operasque vocal exercises, to more classical Ella Fitzgerald-esque ballads, all atmospherically accompanied by a fairly large seven-piece band.
