Cindy Lee 's Diamond Jubilee is an album for anyone who's ever wondered what it must have been like to hear The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" on the radio for the first time in 1963. Or for anyone who, in the modern music landscape, misses the crackle of the radio and the element of surprise that surfing the internet offered. What was that beautiful song? And what station was it on?
For two hours, Cindy Lee's songs flow seamlessly together. It's a gritty, nostalgic, psychedelic landscape, filled with 60s girl groups, surf rockers, lost crooners, Velvet Underground stalwarts, and Motown aspirants. Lee performs them all as if they were tapes that have been gathering dust for 60 years.
It's only logical that the Canadian hasn't put Diamond Jubilee (one of the best albums of 2024 according to Pitchfork, The Guardian, and Stereogum) on streaming services. This is an album that requires patience—and those who show it will be rewarded.
