These are the types James McMurtry embodies with verve, perhaps because the roots-rock veteran himself sounds a bit broken on his umpteenth album. All those tragic stories are wrapped in a familiar, bitter sound, gruff with dust. It rusts and smells of gasoline and tear gas.
