Nog altijd zijn er maar weinig die andermans werk kunnen zingen met de bezieling van Mavis Staples. De hare is een vervlogen kunst, maar ze houdt haar muziekkeuzes actueel. Op Sad and Beautiful World vertolkt de 86-jarige gospellegende Curtis Mayfield en Tom Waits, maar ook Kevin Morby en Frank Ocean. Ze heeft er ook een behoorlijk hippe band bij gevonden - met daarin onder meer MJ Lenderman, Waxahatchee, Kara Jackson, Patterson Hood en de halve familie Tweedy.
