Just as Paul Cézanne produced post-impressionist work, you could also say that Walter Smith's tribute to Houston is a post-impressionist work; because it swings like crazy, but demands sincere attention with its exuberant solos and the balancing act on the slippery slope between form and melody. But Smith always manages to hold on to the melody, despite the adventure. Incidentally, the song 'Cézanne' is not about the painter, but about a defunct jazz club in Houston. ''Cézanne was the place where you could hear good music, without it being relegated to the background. It was our Village Vanguard .'' Smith hopes to make it clear with this record that there is a lively music scene in Houston. ''Texas is more than oil, weapons and politics.
